Does AI Really Save Time? Cost Per Result

AI output still needs checking and fixing. Learn to work out the true cost per accepted result, with worked examples where AI saves money and where it does not.

A tool that writes a first draft in 30 seconds is not saving you time if you then spend 40 minutes checking and rewriting it. To judge an AI tool honestly, measure cost per accepted result: the total cost of your time and the tool, divided by the number of finished pieces of work you would actually use.

The four parts of AI time

  1. Prompting: writing the instruction and waiting for the answer.
  2. Review: reading the output carefully enough to catch mistakes.
  3. Correction: fixing results that are close but not right.
  4. Redoing: starting again by hand when the result is unusable.

Only the first part is quick. Reviewing carefully is the one people underestimate.

Example 1: AI clearly helps

A task takes 45 minutes by hand. With AI it takes 5 minutes to prompt, 10 minutes to review, and 40 percent of results need 15 minutes of correction while 10 percent are unusable and redone by hand. The average time per task is 5 + 10 + (0.4 × 15) + (0.1 × 45) = 25.5 minutes.

At £30 an hour and 40 tasks a month, doing it by hand costs £900 and takes 30 hours. With AI it takes 17 hours, which is £510 of time plus a £20 subscription, so £530 in total. The saving is about £370 a month, or £13.25 per result against £22.50.

Example 2: AI costs more

Change three things: careful review takes 25 minutes, 60 percent of results need 30 minutes of fixing and 20 percent are unusable. The average rises to 5 + 25 + (0.6 × 30) + (0.2 × 45) = 57 minutes, longer than the 45 minutes by hand. Monthly cost becomes £1,160 against £900, so the tool costs about £260 more than not using it.

What decides the result

FactorEffect
Review timeThe biggest swing. Work that must be checked line by line, such as legal or numerical content, gains less.
Share needing correctionEach extra 10 percent of results needing fixes adds minutes to every task.
Unusable resultsExpensive, because you pay for the AI attempt and the manual redo.
VolumeA £20 subscription is trivial across 40 tasks and noticeable across 5.
Your hourly rateHigher rates make saved minutes worth more, but also make wasted minutes cost more.

How to measure your own numbers

Time ten real tasks, both ways if you can. Note how long review actually takes, not how long you think it should. Count how many outputs you had to correct and how many you scrapped. Then enter the averages into the AI Work Review Cost Calculator. If you are unsure of your hourly rate, the Salary to Hourly Calculator will convert a salary.

Making the numbers better

  • Use AI for tasks where mistakes are easy to spot.
  • Give clear instructions and examples to reduce corrections.
  • Keep a checklist for review so it is fast and consistent.
  • Pay for tools only in the months you need them. The AI Subscription Rotation Planner shows the saving.

Frequently asked questions

Does this mean AI is not worth using? No. It means the benefit depends on the task. Where review is quick and results are usually right, savings can be large.

What if the quality is better, not just faster? The calculator measures time and money only. If AI improves quality in a way that earns you more, add that value separately.
