Is an EV Charging Subscription Worth It?
How to tell whether a public charging membership beats pay-as-you-go: the break-even formula, worked examples at four mileages and the costs people forget.

If you cannot charge at home, public charging is your fuel bill, and most networks sell a monthly membership that lowers the price per kWh in return for a fee. Whether that is worth it depends on one thing: how many kWh you buy each month. Below a certain amount the fee costs more than the discount saves. Above it, the membership pays for itself every month.
The break-even formula
Break-even kWh per month = monthly fee ÷ (pay-as-you-go price per kWh − member price per kWh). Use pounds per kWh, so 79p is 0.79.
Example: a membership costs £7.85 a month and drops the price from 79p to 62p, a saving of 17p per kWh. £7.85 ÷ £0.17 = about 46 kWh a month. At 3.3 miles per kWh that is roughly 152 miles of public charging a month. Charge less than that and pay as you go is cheaper.
Worked examples at four mileages
These use the example prices above, a car that does 3.3 miles per kWh and 10 percent charging losses (energy lost as heat, which you still pay for).
| Miles a month | kWh bought | Pay as you go | Membership | Better option |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 33 | £26.33 | £28.52 | Pay as you go, by £2.19 |
| 300 | 100 | £79.00 | £69.85 | Membership, by £9.15 |
| 700 | 233 | £184.33 | £152.52 | Membership, by £31.82 |
| 1,200 | 400 | £316.00 | £255.85 | Membership, by £60.15 |
The same membership is a poor choice at 100 miles a month and saves about £722 a year at 1,200. The deciding number is your own usage, not the headline discount.
Costs people forget
- Charging losses. You pay for the energy leaving the charger, not the energy reaching the wheels. Allow 5 to 15 percent.
- Session and idle fees. Some networks add a fixed fee per session or charge for staying plugged in after you finish.
- Parking. A cheaper rate means little if the car park charges by the hour.
- Rates differ by speed. Rapid and ultra-rapid chargers usually cost more per kWh than slower ones, and membership discounts may apply to only some of them.
- Your own network. A membership only helps if the chargers on your regular routes belong to that network.
When two memberships compete
Enter both into the calculator along with pay as you go and compare monthly cost. A cheap membership with a higher rate often wins at low usage, while a higher fee with a lower rate wins as your mileage grows. Because prices change often, check each network's current tariff before you sign up and note any minimum term.
Is the cheaper charger worth a detour?
The same logic applies on the road. Driving eight extra miles to save 17p per kWh on 40 kWh saves £6.80, but the extra miles use about £1.50 of energy and 16 minutes of your time. At £12 an hour the net gain is about £2.10, so it is only just worth it. The detour calculator does this sum with your own numbers.

Frequently asked questions
Is a subscription worth it if I charge at home most of the time? Usually not. Home charging is normally the cheapest, so only your public charging counts towards the break-even figure.
Can I cancel a charging membership at any time? It depends on the network. Some are monthly with no commitment and others have a minimum term, so check before joining.
Prices in this guide are examples to show the method, not current tariffs. Always check the network's own site.
