**How much sun do vegetables need?** Leafy crops and herbs such as mint and lettuce tolerate 3 to 4 hours of direct sun. Fruiting crops such as tomatoes, chillies and strawberries need 6 or more.

**What if my balcony is windy?** Choose compact plants, use heavy pots, add a windbreak such as a trellis with netting, and avoid tall tomatoes and runner beans.
