Hot Spring Mixing and Soak Time Calculator

Work out how much cold stream water to mix into a hot pool for a target temperature, and get a cautious soak-time guide. Free, private and instant.

How to use the Hot Spring Mixing and Soak Time Calculator

  1. Choose °C or °F.
  2. Enter the temperature of the hot pool, the cold stream or tap water you can mix in, and the temperature you want.
  3. Read what share of hot and cold water to use, and the amount of each per 10 litres, plus a cautious soak-time note.
  4. Check with a thermometer and adjust. Real temperatures change as the water cools.

Example

Worked example (118 °F pool, 55 °F stream, target 102 °F)

  • Hot share: (102 − 55) ÷ (118 − 55) = 74.6%
  • Cold share: 25.4%
  • Per 10 litres: 7.46 litres hot, 2.54 litres cold
  • Soak note: Just under 104 °F, so a first soak of about 10 to 15 minutes

Limitations

  • The mixing formula is idealised. It ignores heat lost to the air and the ground, so use a thermometer.
  • The soak times are cautious general guides based on common hot tub advice of a 104 °F (40 °C) upper limit. Hot springs vary and are often not regulated or monitored.
  • This is not medical advice. Children, pregnant people, older people and anyone with a heart condition should take extra care.
  • Natural springs can be much hotter than they look and can carry bacteria or amoebae. Follow local signs and rules.

About this tool

Natural hot springs are often hotter than is comfortable or safe. This calculator shows how much cold water to blend with the hot water to reach a target temperature, using the simple mixing formula, and then gives a cautious guide for how long to stay in water at that temperature. Enter temperatures in °C or °F. The soak guide is general safety information, not medical advice, and it errs on the side of caution.
