Plant Spacing and Plant Count Calculator (Garden Beds)
Work out how many plants fit in a bed at a given spacing, in a square grid or a staggered pattern. Free, private and instant.
How to use the Plant Spacing and Plant Count Calculator (Garden Beds)
- Choose metric or imperial units.
- Enter the length and width of the bed, and the spacing from the seed packet or plant label.
- Choose a square grid or a staggered layout.
- Read how many plants fit and the planting density.
Example
Worked example (bed 3 m × 1.2 m, 30 cm spacing)
- Square grid: 10 × 4 = 40 plants
- Area: 3.60 m², 11.1 plants per m²
- Staggered: 4 rows (10, 9, 10 and 9 plants), which gives 38, so no gain in a narrow bed
- Bed 3 m × 3 m: 100 in a square grid, 105 staggered (11 rows)
Limitations
- The bed is treated as a rectangle with plants half a spacing in from the edge. Some crops tolerate planting right to the edge.
- The right spacing depends on the variety and growing method, so follow the seed packet.
- The staggered figure is an idealised count.

Frequently asked questions
How many plants fit in a 3 m by 1.2 m bed at 30 cm spacing?
40 in a square grid, or 38 if staggered, because the bed is too narrow for an extra row. A wider bed, such as 3 m × 3 m, fits 100 in a grid and 105 staggered.
What is staggered planting?
Each row is offset by half a spacing, so plants sit in a zigzag and rows can be closer together.
Does spacing mean centre to centre?
Yes. Spacing is the distance from the middle of one plant to the middle of the next.
Is the Plant Spacing and Plant Count Calculator (Garden Beds) free?
Yes. Plant Spacing and Plant Count Calculator (Garden Beds) is completely free with no sign-up, limits or watermarks.
Is my data private when I use the Plant Spacing and Plant Count Calculator (Garden Beds)?
Yes. It runs in your browser, so your input is not uploaded to our servers.
