How to use the Image Converter (JPG, PNG, WEBP)

1. Choose your image. It is converted in your browser and not uploaded.
2. Pick the format to convert to: PNG, JPG or WEBP. The conversion runs straight away and again each time you change the format.
3. Check the original and converted sizes, then use the download link that appears with the result.

Example

Worked example (synthetic 1600×1000 images made by us, tested in Chromium)

• JPG (82.7 KB) to PNG: 1.07 MB, because PNG is lossless
• JPG (82.7 KB) to WEBP: 59.2 KB, about 28% smaller
• PNG photo (1.63 MB) to JPG: 94.7 KB
• PNG photo (1.63 MB) to WEBP: 49.5 KB
• WEBP (45.7 KB) to PNG: 502.8 KB
• WEBP (45.7 KB) to JPG: 80.0 KB, so the file got larger
• Transparent logo, 800×600 PNG (361.8 KB): to JPG 72.5 KB with a white background, to WEBP 60.9 KB with transparency kept

Limitations

• JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas turn white. PNG and WEBP keep it.
• JPG and WEBP are lossy and are saved at a fixed 92% quality. Converting to PNG does not restore detail a lossy file has already lost.
• Converting to JPG can make a WEBP larger, as the example shows. Use the Image Compressor to choose a lower quality.
• Photo metadata such as camera and location is not kept. Animated images keep only the first frame.
• Some older software and email clients cannot open WEBP, so keep a JPG or PNG when compatibility matters.
