Seeded Brackets, Byes and Best-of Series Odds Explained
How standard tournament seeding works, why byes go to the top seeds, how many matches a bracket needs and how a best-of-7 favours the stronger team.
Tournament formats look simple until you try to organise one. Who plays whom, what happens when the number of teams is awkward, and how much a longer series helps the better team are all answered by a little arithmetic. This guide uses the Tournament Bracket Generator and the Series Win Probability Calculator.
Standard seeding
In a seeded single-elimination bracket the strongest team is meant to meet the weakest first, and the top seeds are placed so they cannot meet each other early. With 8 teams ranked Alpha to Hotel, the first round is:
| Match | Teams |
|---|---|
| 1 | (1) Alpha vs (8) Hotel |
| 2 | (4) Delta vs (5) Echo |
| 3 | (2) Bravo vs (7) Golf |
| 4 | (3) Charlie vs (6) Foxtrot |
The winners of matches 1 and 2 meet in the semi-final, and so do the winners of 3 and 4. That keeps seeds 1 and 2 apart until the final.
Byes: when the numbers do not fit
Brackets work in powers of two: 4, 8, 16, 32. With 7 teams, the bracket has 8 places and one team skips round 1. That is a bye, and it goes to the top seed. In the generator, Alpha gets the only bye in a 7-team bracket and the other six teams play round 1.
How many matches?
- Single elimination: n − 1 matches for n teams, because every match removes one team and one team remains.
- Round robin: n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 matches. Six teams play 15 matches over 5 rounds, using the circle method where one team stays fixed and the others rotate.
Single elimination or round robin?
| Single elimination | Round robin | |
|---|---|---|
| Matches | Few | Many |
| Fairness | One bad game ends your run | Every team plays everyone |
| Best when | Time is short and you need a winner | You want everyone to play several matches |
Best-of series: how much does length help?
If team A wins any single game with probability 60%, the chance that it wins a series grows with the length of the series:
| Series | Team A wins the series |
|---|---|
| Best of 1 | 60.00% |
| Best of 3 | 64.80% |
| Best of 5 | 68.26% |
| Best of 7 | 71.02% |
| Best of 9 | 73.34% |
Even a best-of-9 leaves the weaker team with more than a one-in-four chance. A best-of-7 lasts 5.7 games on average, and the chance of each exact result at 60% a game is 4–0: 12.96%, 4–1: 20.74%, 4–2: 20.74% and 4–3: 16.59%.
What the maths ignores
- Home advantage, injuries and form change a team’s chance between games.
- The single-game chance has to come from somewhere: ratings, records or your own judgement.
- None of this is betting advice.
Drawing teams at random
If you have no seeds, tick Shuffle in the generator, or draw the order with the Spinner Wheel in elimination mode.
Frequently asked questions
Why do top seeds get byes? It is the reward for a higher seed. Organisers can choose other rules.
How many rounds does a bracket need? The number of times you can halve the field: 3 rounds for 8 teams, 4 for 16.
